The Mississauga Nation chose to fight alongside British troops to defend Fort York against the invading Americans. Poet and storyteller Stacey LaForme of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation brings to life these troubled times. The evening will also include a short tour of the Fort, focusing on First Nations involvement in the War of 1812. Refreshments are included.

Join historians RICHARD FELTOE, author of Redcoated Ploughboys: The Volunteer Battalion of Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada 1813-1815 and SANDY ANTAL, author of A Wampum Denied: Proctor's War of 1812 as they discuss the roles played by volunteer Upper Canadians, First Nations allies, and the regular British army in defending Toronto and Upper Canada in the War of 1812.

Explore Toronto's diverse and exciting history at Fort York. Visit the historic kitchen and sample some delicious, traditional baking from the hearth. Hot chocolate and a roaring fire will make this a heartwarming and memorable visit. Regular admission.

Wed. February 8, 9 am to 5 pm
Presented by Senior College of the University of Toronto and Fort York National Historic Site, this one-day event will explore the literature and music inspired by the War of 1812, the battle at York, the participation of women, and the contribution of Aboriginal peoples. Throughout the day guests will be treated to 1812 food and ambiance while hearing lectures and discussions from leading historians. A concluding panel of scholars will discuss the significance of the war for Canada, for the United States, and for the world.

Extra fun for kids at Fort York (ages 4 and up)
Tues. to Sat. December 27 to 31, 11 am and 2 pm
While you enjoy a tour of Fort York your kids can join the cooks in the Officers' Mess kitchen to create traditional gingerbread cookies. In this hands-on workshop, kids will use period cooking utensils and tools to sift flour, crush cinnamon, cloves, or allspice, pound sugar and grate nutmeg and ginger as they prepare an 1800s gingerbread recipe. Samples may be taken home–if they last that long! Workshop is limited to 15 participants.
Included with regular admission, sign up in the Museum Store when you arrive.

Learn the customs of the Georgians and live like royalty for a day! Enjoy an afternoon dance demonstration and workshop; attend an illustrated talk about the period; then sit down for an elegant Georgian-inspired buffet dinner and an evening ball with live musicians. Costumes encouraged!

Queen Charlotte's Birthday Ball recalls a significant event in Toronto's history, a Ball organized by the officers of the Garrison at York (Fort York) on 20 January 1817.
Our event is a Ball recreating an early 19th century social gathering. It offers instruction in period dance, a guest lecturer, an extensively researched and authentically prepared Georgian supper, and concludes with an evening of English Country Dancing. This year's dance callers are Tom and Toni Tumbusch.
